Bushido Garvey is a moniker for Brandon White, a pro-black kid obsessed with martial arts films that turned into an adult educator. The emcee stage name still represents many of his concerns, values, and passions. He is currently teaching at Northeast & Northwest High School at the Douglass Campus for the Rochester City School District. The emcee/classroom educator is a Middle School ELA teacher traditionally, however this year he is T.O.A. (teaching on assignment) to further implement the restorative practice initiatives in the school building. Since it was hip-hop that made education relevant to him as an adolescent student, he specializes in providing that cultural relevance and responsiveness through pedagogy and content. Each year, he has co-run an after school club called Chess, Rhymes, and Wisdom (self explanatory right?). Along with teaching at Douglass, Garvey is a part of the Community Task Force to Improve School Culture, a member of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Teacher Advisory Council, and a faithful member of Light of the World Church. He has worked for NEAD Freedom Schools as Servant Leader and Site Coordinator, and just completed his graduate progam for Library and Information Studies.
